Bot Traffic and Fake Leads Are Polluting Your Conversions

Spam form fills and bot sessions teach your bidding to chase junk. Here is how to spot fake conversions and stop paying to acquire more of them.

Your lead volume doubled. Nobody is answering the phone. Sales say the enquiries are gibberish and half of them list the same address in a country you do not operate in.

Congratulations, you are paying to acquire bots, and your bidding algorithm is getting very good at finding more of them.

Why this is worse than wasted spend

The obvious cost is the click budget spent on traffic that will never buy.

The expensive part is what it teaches your campaigns. Smart Bidding optimises toward whatever you tell it is a conversion. Feed it two hundred spam form fills and it learns that the audiences producing spam are your best audiences. It then spends more there, deliberately.

Left alone for a few months, this reshapes an entire account around junk.

How to spot it

Look for these patterns in your leads and analytics.

  • Form fills with nonsense names, random character strings, or the same message text repeated.

  • Sessions lasting zero seconds that still record a conversion. Real people take time to fill in a form.

  • Traffic spikes from regions you do not target or do not ship to.

  • An implausible conversion rate. Cold traffic converting at 40 percent is not a breakthrough.

  • Conversions clustered at strange hours, often perfectly evenly spaced.

  • Every field completed perfectly including the optional ones nobody fills in.

Cross reference with your CRM. If your ad platform reports 300 leads and your sales team recognises 90 of them, you have your answer.

Stopping it at the form

Prevention is more effective than filtering after the fact.

  • Add a honeypot field. A hidden field that humans never see and never fill. If it has a value, it is a bot. This is simple, invisible to real users, and catches a lot.

  • Use a modern captcha that scores behaviour rather than making everyone identify traffic lights.

  • Add a time check. A form completed in under two seconds was not completed by a person.

  • Require confirmation for high value forms, for example a verified email or phone step.

  • Rate limit submissions from the same address.

Cleaning up the tracking side

Blocking the bots is step one. Step two is making sure the ones that got through stop influencing your bidding.

  1. Turn on bot filtering in your analytics platform. It is imperfect but free.

  2. Exclude known bad regions in campaign settings if you genuinely do not sell there.

  3. Stop counting raw form submissions as your primary conversion. This is the important one.

  4. Report qualified leads instead. Send the conversion back only once a human has confirmed the lead is real, which is exactly what offline conversion tracking is designed for.

  5. Add IP exclusions for your own office so internal testing does not pollute the data either.

The change that fixes it properly

Everything above helps. The structural fix is to stop treating a form submission as a conversion at all.

When your primary conversion is a qualified lead confirmed by a person, bots become almost harmless. They can still fill in your form, but they cannot get themselves marked as qualified, so they never reach the bidding algorithm.

It takes more setup than a captcha. It also means your campaigns optimise toward customers rather than traffic, which is worth the effort on its own.

Do not overcorrect

Aggressive filtering blocks real people. An awkward captcha on a mobile form costs you genuine enquiries, and those losses are invisible because nobody reports a form they gave up on.

Start with the honeypot and the timing check. They are invisible to real users. Escalate only if the problem continues.

Need this fixed properly?

If your lead volume looks great and your sales team disagrees, the gap between those two numbers is usually measurable and fixable. I set up and repair tracking for ecommerce stores and lead generation businesses, so the numbers in your ad accounts match the money in your bank account.
