Google Ads Enhanced Conversions: Setup and Verification
Enhanced conversions recover sales that normal tracking misses. Here is how to set them up, and how to confirm they are genuinely working rather than just switched on.

Enhanced conversions are one of the few tracking features that genuinely recover lost sales rather than just reshuffling credit.
They are also frequently switched on, never verified, and quietly doing nothing.
What they do, in plain terms
Normal conversion tracking relies on a cookie connecting the sale back to the click. When that cookie is missing, because the browser blocked it or too much time passed, the conversion cannot be matched and goes unreported.
Enhanced conversions add a second route. When someone converts, you send hashed customer data, usually the email address, alongside the conversion. Google matches that against signed in users and recovers conversions the cookie route lost.
The data is hashed in the browser before it is sent, so you are not transmitting readable email addresses.
Two versions, and people mix them up
Enhanced conversions for web recovers online conversions using data captured at the point of purchase or form submission.
Enhanced conversions for leads works differently. It ties an offline outcome back to the original click using the customer’s email, which matters when the sale closes days later in a CRM. If that is your situation, it sits alongside offline conversion tracking rather than replacing it.
Pick the one that matches how your business actually converts.
Setting it up
There are three routes and they differ mainly in effort.
Google Tag Manager. The most controllable option. You define which page values to capture and pass them with the conversion.
Google tag directly. Simpler, with automatic collection that tries to find customer data on the page by itself.
Google Ads API. For businesses uploading conversion data programmatically.
For most stores and lead generation sites, the tag manager route is the right balance. Automatic collection is convenient but it guesses which fields are which, and it guesses wrong on unusual checkout layouts.
Verification, which is the part that gets skipped
Switching the toggle on is not the same as it working. Check all three of these.
Check the diagnostics screen. Open the conversion action in Google Ads and look at the enhanced conversions section. It reports whether data is being received and flags problems directly.
Watch a real conversion. Use tag manager preview, complete a test conversion, and confirm the user data is present in the request. You should see hashed values, not readable ones.
Wait and check the recovery. After a couple of weeks, look for the additional conversions attributed to enhanced matching. If the number is zero, it is not working regardless of what the setup screen says.
Why it commonly fails
The customer data is not on the page. If your thank you page does not contain the email address anywhere, there is nothing to capture. This is the most common cause by far.
The field selectors broke. A theme update renames a field and the capture silently stops. Nothing errors, it just returns empty.
Consent is blocking it. Without permission to use the data for advertising, enhanced conversions cannot run.
The wrong terms were accepted. There is a customer data terms acceptance step in Google Ads. Skip it and nothing works.
Data is being sent unhashed or hashed incorrectly, so matches never land.
What to expect
Typical uplift is somewhere between 5 and 15 percent additional conversions recorded, though it varies a lot by industry and audience.
These are not new sales. They are sales that were always happening and were never credited. The value is that Smart Bidding finally sees them, which changes what it decides to fund.
