How to Build Custom Channel Groups in GA4

Default channel groupings lump your paid traffic together badly. Here is how to build groupings that match how you actually buy media.

Default channel groupings are built for a generic website, and your site is not generic.

Paid Search lumps brand and non brand together. Paid Social treats a retargeting campaign the same as a cold prospecting one. Anything that does not match Google’s rules lands in Unassigned and disappears from the conversation.

Custom channel groups fix this, and GA4 applies them retroactively, which makes them one of the better features in the product.

What is wrong with the defaults

Three specific problems.

  • Brand and non brand are the same channel. These behave completely differently. Brand search converts at five times the rate and costs a fraction as much. Averaging them together hides both.

  • Funnel stage is invisible. Prospecting and retargeting sit in the same bucket even though one creates demand and one harvests it.

  • Strict rules create Unassigned. Google’s definitions require specific source and medium combinations. Anything slightly off goes to Unassigned, and on many sites that is a double digit percentage of sessions.

If Unassigned is a large slice of your traffic, fix the underlying tagging first, because a channel group cannot rescue data that was never labelled: fixing unassigned traffic in GA4.

Building one

Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups, then Create new channel group.

You get an ordered list of rules. The first matching rule wins, so order is everything. Put your most specific rules at the top and your catch alls at the bottom.

A grouping that works for most paid heavy businesses

Here is a structure I use as a starting point. Adapt the campaign naming to yours.

  1. Paid Search Brand. Source google, medium cpc, campaign name contains brand.

  2. Paid Search Non Brand. Source google, medium cpc, everything else.

  3. Paid Shopping. Medium cpc with a shopping campaign identifier.

  4. Paid Social Retargeting. Paid social sources where campaign name contains rmkt or retargeting.

  5. Paid Social Prospecting. Everything else on paid social.

  6. Paid Video. YouTube and video campaign identifiers.

  7. Email. Medium email, plus your ESP’s source values.

  8. Organic Search Brand and Organic Search Non Brand, if you have search query data available.

  9. Organic Social, Referral, Direct.

Notice how much of this depends on campaign naming. Which is the real lesson here.

Consistent campaign naming is the prerequisite

Custom channel groups are pattern matching on your campaign names. If your campaigns are named Summer Sale, summer-sale-v2 and SS_final_FINAL, no rule will separate them reliably.

Agree a convention and enforce it. Something like channel, funnel stage, audience, offer, separated consistently. It does not matter much what the convention is. It matters enormously that there is one.

This is genuinely a five minute decision that improves your reporting permanently, and it is the thing most teams never get around to.

The retroactive part

Custom channel groups in GA4 apply to historical data as well as future data. Change a rule today and last year’s reports update too.

This is great and also slightly dangerous. A rule change silently rewrites history, so if a number in a saved report suddenly looks different, check whether someone edited the channel group.

Write down when you change rules. Same discipline as any other reporting change.

Where custom groups show up

In standard acquisition reports you can switch the grouping using the dimension selector. In Explorations, your custom grouping appears as a dimension you can use anywhere.

You can have several. A marketing team view and a finance view can be different groupings of the same data, which is sometimes the diplomatic solution.

Manual tagging is still required

Auto tagging handles Google Ads. Everything else needs UTM parameters, correctly and consistently.

The most common failure is a missing or inconsistent medium. Meta traffic tagged as medium paid-social in one campaign and paidsocial in another lands in two different channels. Pick one spelling and put it in your convention.

Also check that your UTMs survive redirects, because they frequently do not: UTM parameters lost in redirects.

A practical first version

Do not try to build the perfect grouping on day one. Start with the split that would change a decision this month.

For most accounts that is brand versus non brand paid search. Build that one rule, look at the difference it makes to your reported cost per acquisition, and go from there.

Need this built properly?

Channel groupings should describe how you actually buy media, not how Google assumed you would. I set up and repair tracking for ecommerce stores and lead generation businesses, so the numbers in your ad accounts match the money in your bank account.
